This website is the outcome of a public debate which Lamberto Tassinari (author of John Florio, The Man who was Shakespeare, Giano Books, 2009) and Michel Vaïs (who translated the book into French under the title John Florio alias Shakespeare, Le Bord de l’eau, Lormont, 2016) took part in. Initiated by Josette Féral, chair of EASTAP (European Association for the Study of Theatre and Performance), that public debate was held at « La Coupole, » the theatre of the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, on October 27, 2018. It allowed Lamberto and Michel to meet Jean-Patrick Connerade, Fabrice Collot and Claudio Cicotti (who all shared their interest in the role John Florio played in the authorship of William Shakespeare’s works) and create an open and informal circle, “Le Cercle de la Coupole,” which was then joined by Laura Orsi from Franklin University in Switzerland. The six of them co-host this website dedicated to John Florio / Shakespeare.
Ce site résulte d’une discussion publique à laquelle ont pris part Lamberto Tassinari (auteur de John Florio, The Man who was Shakespeare, Giano Books, 2009) et Michel Vaïs (qui a traduit son livre en français sous le titre John Florio alias Shakespeare, Le Bord de l’eau, Lormont, 2016). Cette discussion publique, qui a eu lieu à l’invitation de Josette Féral, présidente de l’EASTAP (European Association for the Study of Theatre and Performance) au théâtre de la Coupole de la Cité internationale universitaire de Paris le 27 octobre 2018, a permis la rencontre de Jean-Patrick Connerade, Fabrice Collot et Claudio Cicotti, tous intéressés au rôle qu’a joué John Florio dans l’écriture des œuvres de Shakespeare, avec lesquels a été créé le groupe ouvert et informel appelé «Cercle de la Coupole». Plus tard s’est ajoutée Laura Orsi de la Franklin University en Suisse. Ces six personnes animent ce nouveau site Web consacré à John Florio/Shakespeare.
Lamberto Tassinari
He was born in Castelfiorentino (Italy) and spent his childhood on the island of Elba. After obtaining a Laurea in Philosophy from the University of Florence, he lived in Rome, Milan and Turin. He moved to Montreal in 1981. Two years later he was one of the founders of the transcultural magazine ViceVersa which he directed until its last issue in 1997. Between 1982 and 2007, he taught Italian language and literature at the Université de Montréal. In 1985 he published a novel in Italian, Durante la partenza, a collection of essays in French, Utopies par le hublot in 1999. In 2008, his research on John Florio became a book in Italian with the title Shakespeare? È il nome d’arte di John Florio and one year later appeared in English as John Florio The Man Who Was Shakespeare. In 2016 it was published in France with the title John Florio alias Shakespeare. His work on John Florio is currently in translation from the most recent Italian version into German. That book will be published in 2024.
Michel Vaïs
Rédacteur émérite à la revue de théâtre Jeu, du Québec, journaliste indépendant et traducteur, Michel Vaïs est Secrétaire général de l’Association internationale des critiques de théâtre depuis 1998. Il a effectué plus de soixante missions à l’étranger pour l’AICT : conférences, jurys, organisation de colloques, etc. Après des études en lettres françaises à l’Université de Montréal et à McGill, il a obtenu un doctorat d’études théâtrales à l’Université de Paris 8. Sa thèse, publiée sous le titre L’Écrivain scénique (Presses de l’Université du Québec, 1978), lui a valu le prix Révélation de l’Académie Nicola Sabbatini au Festival du livre de Nice. Il a reçu la médaille d’or du Rayonnement culturel décerné par la Renaissance française et plusieurs prix Jean-Béraud pour son activité de critique de théâtre, notamment au journal Le Devoir, et à la chaîne culturelle de Radio-Canada pendant 22 ans. Michel Vaïs a enseigné 12 ans dans trois universités et publié ses mémoires : L’accompagnateur. Parcours d’un critique de théâtre (Éd. Varia, 2005). Le premier Dictionnaire des artistes du théâtre québécois, dont il est directeur éditorial, a paru en 2008 (Éd. JEU/Québec Amérique). Son dernier ouvrage est la version française du livre de Lamberto Tassinari, John Florio alias Shakespeare (Éditions Le Bord de l’Eau, Bordeaux, France, 2016).
Fabrice Collot
Fabrice Collot is an independent scholar and writer who lives and teaches English in Paris. While he was a student of English and American Literature (at the universities of Paris III, Paris VII and at the ENS Cachan) from the mid-1990s to the early years of the millennium, he did not question the authorship of the Shakespearean canon, uncritically accepting its traditional attribution to the « man from Stratford. » The reading of Lamberto Tassinari’s John Florio alias Shakespeare in 2016 was an eye-opener. It set him on a path of research and discoveries of his own, in which « Shakespeare » emerged as the brand name of a group of poets formed around the masterly figure of John Florio. He is currently writing a book of critical fiction as well as articles to share his findings about the Florio / Shakespeare « workshop. »
